Smart Plastics Initiative

The Smart Plastics initiative is a professional service and know-how network for develop-ments and projects at the interface of mechatronics, plastics and design. The objective is to manufacture functional components that meet the highest quality and design specifications.

20 partners from industry and research use this platform for the creative exchange of know-ledge and future-oriented technologies and for carrying out joint development projects.
The focus is on the industrial and large-scale technology implementation of direct, seamless integration of a wide range of electronic functionalities in various types of components. These electronic functionalities (innovative technologies as well as conventional electronic compo-nents) are realised using innovative coating and/or assembly technologies.
The manufacture of functionalised, plastics-based components is done via thermoforming and/or in-mould processes (Functional Film Insert Moulding).

The partner structure of the initiative covers the entire value-adding chain from plastics as the starting materials through to high quality, functionalised components.
